چکیده

To the Editor We have read with great interest the article “Epicardial Adiposity is Associated with Microalbuminuria in Patients with Essential Hypertension” written by Ozturk et al., which was recently published in Acta Cardiologica Sinica. The authors demonstrated that patients with microalbuminuria and hypertension had significantly higher mean epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness values than patients with normoalbuminuria. Also, they concluded that EAT thickness is a useful marker in cardiovascular risk stratification in these patients. Following careful review, we have the following comments and concerns. Thyroid hormone has several effects on the cardiovascular system, and it is associated with endothelial damage. Additionally, it is well known that endothelial impairment is related to development of hypertension and chronic renal failure. In a study by El-Eshmawy et al., it has been shown that; subclinical hypothyroidism is independently associated with microalbuminuria in prediabetic patients. Zhau et al., found that serum-free triiodothyronine levels (FT3) were associated with microalbuminuria, and they concluded that FT3 levels could play a role in the pathogenesis of microalbuminuria. Further more, it has been shown in previous studies that EAT was elevated in patients with subclinic hypothyroidism. We wondered whether there was any difference in thyroid function tests between the two groups? We believe that patients with abnormal thyroid function tests should be excluded from the study. In conclusion, to verify the value of EAT thickness measurement in cardiovascular risk stratification, the above mentioned factors should be taken into consideration.

Echocardiographic Epicardial Adipose Tissue as a New Indicator of Cardiovascular Risk

Abstract Background and Purpose: Epicardial fat is the true visceral fat located around the heart, particularly around sub-epicardial coronary arteries that may locally interact and modulate the coronary arteries and myocardium through paracrine or vasocrine secretion of anti-inflammatory and proatherogenic cytokines. Most previous studies have used echocardiography and reported controversia...

Echocardiographic Epicardial Fat Thickness on Short Term Prognosis in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

Introduction Metabolic syndrome is related to multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Visceral obesity seems to play a key role in the development of all features of metabolic syndrome. Hence, the detection of visceral adipose tissue, fat deposited around the internal organs, might be important for the risk stratification of metabolic syndrome. Several methods are applied as surrogates for estima...

Pro-atherogenic mediators and subclinical atherogenesis are related to epicardial adipose tissue thickness in patients with cardiovascular risk

Objective To evaluate the relationship between pro-atherogenic biomarkers and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness in patients with cardiovascular risk factors. Methods Plasma nitric oxide (NO), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, EAT thickness, flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) were determined in patients aged >1...

Background and Aim: Due to the prevalence and socio-economic consequences of obesity in mortality, cardiovascular (CAD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease the effectiveness of aerobic exercise on epicardial adipose tissue (EAT), insulin resistance (IR) and some liver enzymes of high-fat diet-induced obesity male wistar rats was investigated. Methods: Thirty-two male Wistar rats with an averag...
